The Purpose summer break ended with a banger: The Business Roundtables departure from the gospel of shareholder-value in August has sparked a strong public debate around the question that stands at the centre of our work: What’s the purpose of business?

We believe this debate represents an opportunity for economic transformation, but only if we recognize that shifts in corporate terminology and soft commitments won’t do it. If we want responsible, long-term oriented businesses, we need corporate structures that enable and foster value-led corporate behaviour. To put it bluntly: If we want to talk about purpose, we need to talk about ownership.
